In Cumbria, STEM skills are vital as advanced manufacturing, construction and nuclear and clean energy are all growth sectors. Being creative is also important, and to be innovative in solving workplace challenges. ![]() Why? Because there are going to be more skilled jobs available in these areas in the future and people will be needed to do those jobs. STEM subjects are needed to deal with changes in society, such as technological advancements and the internet of thing.Įmployers really value the skills you develop in STEM subjects and careers. STEM subjects are important because of our dependency on technology which is continuously expanding into every aspect of our lives- science is everywhere in the world around us. The demand for STEM careers has never been so high, and it will continue to increase during the upcoming years too. The term is used when these four subjects are studied or used together, supporting one another. Importantly, creative subjects also give young people employability across a range of sectors. ![]() What’s more, over the first decade of their careers, arts graduates can progress just as quickly, with greater wage growth than doctors, for example. While average salaries for arts, humanities and social science graduates are slightly below Stem graduates, the difference is minimal. Yet data from the British Academy suggests that this is not the full picture. ![]() It is a commonly held belief that children studying science, technology, engineering and maths (Stem) subjects are more likely to go into higher-paying careers than those studying the arts, humanities and other creative disciplines. This opinion piece is part of a debate on whether maths should be the biggest priority in secondary education, based on the Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s proposals to make maths compulsory up to age 18.
